About this deal

The foot of this vacuum has been engineered with a flexible joint, helping you to navigate around your home and furniture with ease. Remove the belt and brush and fit new ones - loop the belt around the motor spindle, then loop over the brush and stretch into place. Before you fit the cover give the brush a turn by hand to make sure that the new belt is not jammed.

I used my water-lift meter and anemometer to measure the vacuum’s power in AirWatts. I measured this cleaner at 155.34AW, placing it firmly in the mid-range. Spend more on a vacuum such as the Shark AX950UKT, and you’ll get more than 200AW. Intellicare helps protect your carpets by reducing the brush bar speed when the vacuum is not in motion Next up is gaps in the air flow. This hose is in pretty good condition, but over time the plastic can degrade and rub against parts of the machine and you can end up with something looking like this. Now this is a pretty extreme example, but even the smallest of holes can cause a loss of suction. If there’s one feature you can rely on Hoover to deliver, it’s neat onboard storage for all of its tools. The H-Upright 500 Plus doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Here, the motorised floor brush is attached to the base, while the other accessories clip around the body, including the 2-in-1 crevice tool and brush, the extra-long crevice tool and the attachable hose. Remove the dust box and take it to your dust bin, press the flap release trigger and empty it out as shown

Clean or replace the filters

Storage space is tight: At 113.5cm high and 6.25kg in weight, this isn’t the lightest design you can buy and older folk may find it cumbersome. For something that’s easily portable up the stairs you may want to consider a cordless or cylinder model instead. Take the dust box off and empty it out over your dustbin, press the latch to release the flap at the bottom of the container. Twist the top of the container to remove it and get to the pre motor filter. Your cleaner has brushes that sweep the dirt up from the carpet and these are underneath the cleaner. To replace them start by removing the bottom cover. This is an excellent, compact upright for those who want comprehensive carpet cleaning, but perhaps not for those with hard floors. The good

Good performance, an Automatic mode and neat onboard storage help make this a decent vacuum cleaner – but attaching the hose to use the accessories is super-fiddly. Hoover H-Upright 500 Plus design and features – Excellent storage and easy to use, but the hose is fiddly You have one type of flooring in your home: While this machine works well on all types of flooring, if you have one type of flooring in your home, it may not be worth paying more for a feature you don’t need. We recommend that the belt is changed once per year. The brushes can also be replaced if the bristles have worn away. Remove the cover as shown twist the lid until the arrows line up then it will open. Lift out the filter and for best results wash in warm water Finally, you can install the wiper blade at the rear to increase suction to the floor, although this does make the cleaner much harder to push around, particularly on carpet. Unless you’re experiencing problems with dust collection, I recommend that you leave this out.

Open the bag door and take out the dust box. Twist the lid at the top and remove the filters and cones. Tip the dirt out into your dustbin. Wash the filters shown in warm water. As a plug-in model, cleaning reach is important, and the H-Upright 500 Plus provides up to 15 metres, thanks to the long power cable, hose and the extendable crevice tool (this is 36cm long and has a further extension tube to take it to 76cm). The net result is that whether you’re cleaning down low or up high, reach won’t be a problem with this cleaner; you’ll rarely need to lift its full 6.5kg bulk. The rotating brush bar can be switched off easily so the vacuum can glide more gently over deep pile rugs. We found out the hard way that you must switch off the auto sensor and brush bar buttons when vacuuming delicate surfaces - when we attempted to vacuum over a Persian carpet with the auto sensor button and brush bar on the machine went into overdrive and tried to chew up the tassles. We tried again with both buttons off and it then glided over the carpet and tassles without fault. I found this cleaner easy to push around and it’s pretty flexible, too. However, the H-Upright 500 Plus’ large body means that it may be difficult to get it under all furniture. Shark solves this problem with its Lift-Away range of cleaners, which let you remove the cylinder to push the floor head around on the wand alone. On hard floor, the brush bar automatically dropped down in speed. However, I still found it to be a bit vigorous, with some of the scattering of rice grains being pushed around on the floor. Int his scenario I found that it was better to use the vacuum cleaner with the brush bar turned off.

Hoover H-Upright 500 Sensor Plus review | TechRadar

Advanced multiple cyclones are highly effective at separating dust from the air within the machine, with the result that your vacuum requires less filter maintenance. There’s no motor power control, although you can open the vent at the rear of the cleaner to reduce suction power on some floors.Lastly, if you've tried all of the above and you're still experiencing a loss of suction, it's probably due to the motor. Now you can replace the motor, it's not the easiest of jobs but it's certainly doable and you may find that you don't need to replace the whole motor, just the carbon brushes in the motor. When the brush bar is on it will agitate the carpet fibres so you easily lift out dirt and debris and when you switch it off it will leave your delicate surfaces scratch free.
