About this deal

The original version of Magic Resistance was a controversial racial trait. Magical effects include things like magical traps and many creatures’ special abilities (beholders, etc.), so the Yuan-Ti Pureblood has a widely-applicable defense that can immediately become a balance problem. As a player you want to look for other bonuses to your saves so that you can nearly guarantee success on saving throws, but as a DM you want ways to challenge and threaten players and there are only so many varieties of nonmagical breath weapons and the like. The updated version of the Yuan-Ti is less problematic, as Magic Resistance only applies to spells. Codename Entertainment (September 2017). Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms. Codename Entertainment. The yuan-ti anathema is both fanatical and megalomaniacal, and its ritual of transformation will have burned out any survival instinct its species possesses. However, it’s also ageless and effectively immortal as long as it doesn’t get itself killed, and that’s a persuasive reason to stay alive. Split the difference: the anathema retreats when seriously wounded (reduced to 75 hp or fewer), choosing the Disengage action because of its discipline, its high base movement speed, and its ability to climb and swim. The yuan-ti were devout demon-worshipers. [7] Their worship often involved bloody sacrifices. [6] Most worshiped Sseth, with other serpentine deities that some have worshiped over the years either being masks worn by Sseth or a false deity of the Scaleless Ones. All yuan-ti must act in accordance with the Sacred Way of Sseth - that is, subtly. Whenever possible, yuan-ti choose manipulation over open confrontation, the whisper over the fang. Followers of the Sacred Way of Sseth know their foes, think ahead, and plan forward. [20] Language [ ] Darkness is a concentration spell that’s highly advantageous to the anathema, which has blindsight, but not so much to its allies, which don’t (except for the three yuan-ti malison variants in Volo’s—see below—whose superior darkvision can penetrate magical darkness). Cast when the anathema is encountered alone or its allies have already been taken out.

Yuan-ti abominations resembled massive snakes, some 8 to 12 feet (2.4 to 3.7 meters) long and weighing approximately 200 to 300 pounds (91 to 140 kilograms), with scale-covered humanoid arms. Their scale patterns were variable according to tribe, but they had the wedge-shaped heads distinctive of venomous snakes. [3] Combat [ ] Skip Williams, Jonathan Tweet, Monte Cook (July 2003). Monster Manual v.3.5. ( Wizards of the Coast), p. 264. ISBN 0-7869-2893-X. Lore-wise, their transformation into reptilian creatures made them behave less like people. That means they have no emotions, making choices based on logic and survival, similar to how Lizardfolk are portrayed, but a bit more evil. Still, it is up Post-Ascension: All three of these chambers are occupied by Type 1 Yuan-Ti Malisons unless an event would have drawn their attention elsewhere in the complex. If combat breaks out in one of the chambers, the Yuan-Ti in the adjacent chambers move to join in the fight 1 round later.Natural Weapon. Your fanged maw is your natural, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with your bite, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, and your target must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Con modifier). On a failed save, the target takes 1d4 poison damage.

In approximately -1100 CY, the high priests of the Olman city-states Alocotla and Xapatlapo made a pact with Tlaloc. In an elaborate ceremony, they sacrificed and devoured one thousand infants, and all who partook of that feast were transformed into yuan-ti. These changes bred true, and yuan-ti continue to rule those two cities to this day, as well as the city of Xuxulieto and elsewhere. Except for invisibility, the pit master’s spells are somewhat suboptimal, and it’s better off leading with Meershaulk’s Slumber. On its second turn, it will close to melee range and fight hand-to-hand. After taking moderate damage (reduced to 61 hp or fewer), it will cast vampiric touch to regain some of its lost hit points. If it’s completely surrounded, it will cast misty step to break the siege, and if an enemy spellcaster hurls fireball or lightning bolt its way, it will snuff it out with counterspell; this is the only thing it will use counterspell for, because its slots are scarce, and those are the only two spells of 3rd level or below that can do truly significant damage to it and its allies. Aside from these two circumstances, it will save its second spell slot until round 4 or later, and most likely use it for a second casting of vampiric touch. Ed Greenwood, Sean K. Reynolds, Skip Williams, Rob Heinsoo (June 2001). Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd edition. ( Wizards of the Coast), p. 103. ISBN 0-7869-1836-5. Poison (Ex): Halfbloods and abominations with snake heads only - bite, Fortitude save (DC 17); initial and secondary damage 1d6 temporary Constitution.

The temple’s congregation is composed mostly of Purebloods operating in the world above, leaving only a handful Yuan-Ti present in the temple at any given time. Yuan-ti had their own language, [6] [4] [7] which used the Draconic alphabet, [21] and most could also speak Common. [6] [4] [7] Draconic [4] and Abyssal were also typically known. [4] Some sages reported that all yuan-ti could also communicate readily with any snake or snake-like creature. [6] [7] Architecture [ ] Athrendel is a male Young Brass Dragon who was captured after he brashly attempted to invade the temple (see area 7b). He has heard the Yuan-Ti speaking in draconic about Ssilkashla’s ascension and is frustrated at his inability to break free and put a stop to her schemes. The yuan-ti were once humans who thrived in the earliest days of civilization and worshipped serpents as totem animals. They lauded the serpent's sinuous flexibility, its calculated poise, and its deadly strike. Their advanced philosophy taught the virtue of detachment from emotion and of clear, focused thought. Yuan-ti culture was among the richest in the mortal world. Their warriors were legendary, their empires always expanding. Yuan-ti temples stood at the centers of ancient metropolises, reaching ever higher in prayer to the gods they longed to emulate. In time, the serpent gods heard those prayers, their sibilant voices responding from the darkness as they told the yuan-ti what they must do. The yuan-ti religion grew more fanatical in its devotion. Cults bound themselves to the worship of the serpent gods and imitated their ways, indulging in cannibalism and humanoid sacrifice. Through foul sorcery, the yuan-ti bred with snakes, utterly sacrificing their humanity to become like the serpent gods in form, as well as in thought and emotion. This game-ready dungeon is a Yuan-Ti temple dedicated to the sleeping god Merrshaulk, populated by a small cult that hopes to birth a demigod. The dungeon is built underground and can be accessed by only one staircase, so it can be easily placed behind a secret door in any city or ruin. Natural Weapons. You have sharp fangs, which are natural weapons you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you make an unarmed strike with your fangs, you deal 1d4 piercing damage. Jacobs, James and Richard Pett. "Savage Tidings: The Market is Bad." Dragon #355. Bellevue, WA: Paizo Publishing, 2007. The best movie villains are the ones you fall in love with. Keith’s book grounds villains in specificity, motivation, and tactics—so much so that players will love to hate ’em. This book will enrich your game immeasurably!” —Matthew Lillard

Abominations are almost completely snakelike, with only a few human features, such as arms or a humanoid head. A quarter of the yuan-ti abominations are the Shan-Pachan, with human heads and serpent bodies, who act as high priests. Other abominations include the Ma-Yin, who are snakelike with human arms, and the Ma-Zhi, who are fully serpentlike.Haste turns the anathema’s strongest lieutenant into a yuan-ti Cuisinart. Also a concentration spell. The Young Brass Dragon Athrendel is imprisoned in this room. He shows heavy signs of injuries; he is currently at 20 hit points. Athrendel has been injected with a special poison that negates his ability to use his breath weapon. The poison will last another 7 days unless cured by magic. In Tier II, Abominations can serve as a council of underbosses, each with their own contingent of Malisons, Purebloods, and Broodguards.
