Is that something you took into account when you chose what they would be wearing, what the actors underneath were like? Thank you. For me it was the perfect thing—in her character’s mind, it’s spring. There was the reaping, and kids are gonna be brought to slaughter. She’s thinking, It’s springtime! [ Laughs] You know? Spencer Williams: Trish Summerville! I am so happy that we are finally doing an interview. It’s been a long time coming.

As a little teaser, we’re working on a collaboration for wearable streetwear merchandise and jewelry that we’re doing as a nod to the film. It’ll also be nice to see what the fans think of that! Effie, over time, gets a little more serious. She loses a little bit of her flightiness. Were you able to reflect that in her clothing as the movie progressed? Kurt:"We wanted it to be seen in different ways - we didn't want her to become a super hero in an immobile suit that she can only wear one way. Her wings and shoulders are designed to be ceremonial, but the armour can also be taken off so you can see that girl again - you can see Katniss. Even if it didn't have the wings, she could be out on the field and become a soldier." What is Jennifer like to work with? art director: vfx (uncredited) / concept artist (uncredited) / look development artist (uncredited) Well, one of the great liberties that we did have is, in the world of Panem, in the Capitol, fashion is constantly changing. So we didn’t really have to stay literally tied to a lot of things. After the first film, we got to change with trends and fashion, like in the real world, but at a different pace in the Capitol.camera operator: "a" camera (as Duane Manwiller) / director of photography: additional photography (as Duane Manwiller) / steadicam operator (as Duane Manwiller) Trish Summerville: Having Tigris to dress was great. And then when it’s Hunter Schafer being cast in this role, you get the double win-win. A pair of knee pads come attachable to the suit so that your knees are protected when it comes to those combat moments against the other tributes or you are making your way through the jungle in the arena. She’s so much fun to work with. She tells people that she was my Barbie doll. But she has a lot of good ideas, she knows how things should fit, and she wanted all her clothes to be very constricting — she has that funny walk [in the movie] because she can’t walk any other way. Her shoes are so outrageously high and uncomfortable, and she wanted that. I’m like, “Are you sure you can do the scene?” And she’s like, “Yes, I’ll do it. I’ll take them off in between shots. It’ll be fine.” She was miserable, but she did it because she felt it was right. In the book, the fashions are so outrageous in the Capitol that they aren’t meant to be actually worn. And that was the point: poking fun at fashion, and how outrageous trends can be.

We always take the actors’ personalities into account. I mean, I never really design the clothes until I know who the actor is. Of course they have opinions, but you also have to make the actor comfortable on-camera. That’s my job: to make it easy for them to their job, to not think about the costume. Some of these costumes, of course, are not the most comfortable things on earth, especially in that heat. But you have to let the actor’s personality shine through to a certain extent. Covered in sparkly gold sequins and spectacular moon headpieces, the male and female tributes sported far-out costumes for the 74th Hunger Games. They were "flying to the moon." It also represented that it takes time to travel, and that some people used to use the moon for directions. [1] District 7 - Lumber [ ] Spencer Williams: There’s certainly a relatability and authenticity to these different characters, and sometimes you could see similarities in our world, both bad and good, to Panem. Now I would love to talk about the uniforms that the audience will see in this film. I fell in love with The Academy uniforms. That red color was striking. The uniforms were sophisticated but still scholarly with a Panem flair. I also can appreciate the neutrality of them. The male tribute and Foxface wore costumes that reflected light and shone whenever the tributes turned around. The glittering, eye-catching silver represents the color of wires and other power-like items. Their costumes represented a solar panel. [1] District 6 - Transportation [ ] The District 10 male and female tributes had costumes that were glitzed up in golden fringe, and meant to represent cowboys and cowgirls from their district. [1] For the tulle skirt, I was figuring out what I could do to show a rainbow that would also work functionally because she has to do so many stunts and actions in this costume. She’s in this dress for a very, very long time. It’s a big mix: borrowing, loans, rentals, manufacturing, purchasing. Just because there’s so much stuff in the whole film, to be quite honest, we would have never had the time, nor the money, to build everything ourselves. I was really, really grateful that, you know, some really beautiful designers were willing to loan us pieces.
