About this deal

I need footwear for the out-of-doors across that's appropriate for at least three seasons, if not four. I discovered early on that I could wear them on their own (no socks underneath) and never seem to get blistering. These results are simply anecdotal, but perhaps I’ll do some experimenting this winter with various configurations and report back.

Overall, the socks felt like a quality product and I couldn't wait to get out and test them in the rainforest on my beloved local loop. With a dry suit they are warm in any conditions, but because of the constant squeeze they are not as comfortable as more conventional shoes and don’t really work with orthotic shoes. I wear them in my clipless shoes when biking when it is cold or wet and I think they are magic for that. For me, and for many other sailors, all day comfort, foot health and knee health require the use of custom orthotics, which only fit and function properly in a lace-up shoe.

But they do come with a lifetime guarantee which seems incredible for an item that sees as much wear as a pair of socks. The footwear you choose is a very personal question but as an experienced 20 year trekker, I can't imagine doing such a trek in cross-trainers but that's just me.

Waterproof socks will take twice as long to dry as ordinary socks; you will need multiple pairs for multi-day trips. You have to put the sock on carefully so it doesn't wipe off the hydropel, but, with one application per day, your feet stay pretty nice and dry, and it gives you a nice slick feeling even as your socks start to get a bit funky over a few days. So considering all the above comments then, what would people wear on their feet if they were going to run/walk for say, between 4 and 12 hours, say marathon to ultra, unsupported so just a small running pack, in winter over wet terrain?

I've always had a problem with gaiters, and have never liked them, so I have been trying to think differently about how to keep my below knees and feet dry. They worked well for what I bought them for, but wouldn't use them for winter hill walking, without a back up pair of gloves that could be substituted if the lining gets tangled, or they become soaked. As with waterproof trousers, some waterproof socks are rated on their waterproofness – they follow the same HH scale, so the higher the number, the more waterproof they are. We compared them with wool and fleece socks cycling in freezing temperatures, a severe test of windy dry weather comfort. Longevity is not great there was signs of wear after three or four uses but I use them so infrequently it doesn't really matter.Normally, we wore them alone, but a few times we layered other sock beneath them, depending on the temperature and footwear fit. Even if they leak (they didn’t—we poured some water inside for testing) they remain warmer than wet socks, because like a wet suit, they hold the water in place so it can warm up.
