The eyelets are made of leather with a nylon reinforcement on the inside. The Vibram MegaGrip sole construction is stiff. The front flex point is where it should be: Centered under the forefoot. The sole is extremely torsional stiff and the shoes can be resoled. In the shoe you will find a breathable and waterproof membrane from Gore-Tex. In particular, the transition from the Gore-Tex material to the padding around the ankles is very nicely made. The laces run through eyelets from rope that also pulls the heel counter forwards. Shoe entry I’ve worn these at work after a pre-work hike through creeks and snow and mud. I felt comfortable all day. They also took care of me through the hikes, obviously. I wore these at a country show and then swing dancing at the legendary Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. Hiking boots can be clunky for apres fun; not the Hike Mid GTX. The La Sportiva TX5 Low GTX are super solid hiking and approach shoes that excel in stability. The leather upper and the good heel fixation keep the foot nicely in place. It is also nice that the heel is pulled forward when the laces are closed up, which contributes to that fixation. The shoes are protected by a super bumper. Let’s start with the outer shell. The Hike Mid GTX has seamless uppers with welded TPU overlays. There’s also air mesh on the uppers which makes these more like running shoes than standard boots, dialing up durability while also ensuring breathability. Of course it’s all made bomb-proof by the GORE-TEX linings which deliver next-level waterproofness and breathability. And it’s molded into a wide comfort-fit TX last for extra room for people like me with big paddles for feet. So far I have no complaints with these boots in terms of breathability, but I haven’t hiked with them in 90 degree weather yet…although I may be tempted to try since they are so comfortable.
